ARTISTIC
DIRECTOR'S NOTES
In this,
the third year of The Directors' Workshop, I am impressed with the
supreme pleasures of being a director. It is the window to a deep
and creative human interaction - that between the director and actor,
and between director and designers - that is the most embracing and
provocative part of being a director.
Many
directors will tell, the process of rehearsals is more joyful than
the performance itself. And it is during this multi-faceted process
that the director can hope to find the value and worth of playing
in the sometimes awfully serious game that is theatre.
The final
stages of the rehearsals can be the most embracing of all as the director
"composes the performance". He knows that in the end it will be incomplete,
and that is why a director continues to work during the performance
process itself.
His is
a never-ending journey with one final destination - to make a connection
with the audience.
In our
last meetings with the two "candidate" directors, Joe Hasham and I
have endeavoured to convey the supreme joy of being a director amidst
burdens, struggles and anxieties. It is so good to work with Joe again
to create dialogues about directing, this time, with Reza and James.
